and women. back then, senator barack obama opposed the fcc's proposal. so did senators joe biden and hillary clinton. but now, president obama's man at the fcc -- they were friends in law school -- apparently wants to do what the republicans couldn't do under president bush, and to do it behind the scenes, out of sight, with no public hearings. several public interest groups, civil rights organizations and labor unions opposed the move, and last week, senator bernie sanders and several of his colleagues called on chairman genachowski to hold off. bernie sanders is an outspoken opponent of media consolidation. he sees it as a threat to democracy. once the mayor of burlington, vermont, he served 16 years in the house of representatives and was recently re-elected to his second term in the senate. he's the longest serving independent in the history of congress. he was in new york earlier this week and we met for this interview. welcome. good to see you again. >> good to be with you, bill. >> this is a strong letter, inspired one of your colleagues in the senate says, by you. what's the beef? >>

and i think president obama and vice president biden give people in desperation that hope. you've had times in your life where you've had absolutely nothing, no money, no hope, nothing. you've had times in your life when you've had hundreds of millions of dollars. then you've lost it and now you're getting back there again. tell me about the difference psychologically when you have nothing, when you have money. where is real happiness throughout that process? >> from my perspective, i can only tell you from my ordeals in life and challenges, it all comes from inside. i never had happiness within. that's why i was all about chaotic. i was addicted to chaos because i'm looking for happiness out there somewhere. it has to be within. so it's mostly like an inside job. i learned all this stuff when i went to my rehab stint, i got involved with the recovery program and i realized this is what happiness is, what we make out of it, you know. the reason why i'm not in trouble anymore from that -- i'm not in problems with women, not fighting in clubs because i'm not involved in that lifestyle a

biden shopping at costco last week. did some holiday shopping, and posts pictures with jim senegal and warren buffett's right hnd man and bill gates' dad on the board, too, and receive early dividends and ay less tabs. several reports say the demand for microsoft's surface tablet is so weak that they cut the orders from the asian manufacturer in half. i own microsoft stock. lauren, where is it now? >> 1% and stuart, i feel bad for you, microsoft was the second worst performer in the dow jones for the month of november and needs all of the gains today. and you know, if you've ever walked past time square, i know it's kind of right by where we work. that surface pop-up store from microsoft is always jam packed, i guess it's in a busy area and it's surprising to see they're cutting back on orders. stuart: next time i go in there if i do. i'll press for an early dividend payout of microsoft's 50 billion dollars in cash so some of us can benefit before the end of the year, but i'm not holding my breath on that. all right, lauren, thanks very much indeed. by the way, the dow industrials

of the good things about a choice when you had bill clinton pick al gore, when you had obama pick biden even when you had bush and cheney, they all, in their own way had their chemistry. but they also bring something to a ticket. or more important they do no harm. so they don't change the their at this. they don't change the essence of the message. so when cheney was picked, people might have said is he picking his daddy's friend or someone so old to help him. those are -- that could slap down a candidate but it doesn't change your whole thrust of your main selling point which was for romney, i could be a better steward of the economy than obama. so when -- you evaluate what happened yes so it was a great chemistry. >> bill: right. but politically -- again, it changed the focus of the campaign and then what did -- what did paul ryan bring? he didn't bring wisconsin. so you ended up with two candidates. had born in or lived in and paul ryan couldn't deliver either. >> here's the other thing. i think this is why these

today. actually i think they're meeting with vice president biden. then governors will be meeting with some of the congressional leadership, as well. but you guys are watching this, we know this is drama and theater. do you think a deal gets struck at the end of the day? >> i do. i have to say, i still think we'll get a last minute deal. i just cannot imagine that congress will allow to us go over the cliff. so i think the ramifications for the economy are too significant. i think we're watching whatever you want to call it, all of the politics playing out, but i still think in the end we'll get a last minute deal. >> i agree. and i think even though the sides are far apart, you have things on the table now. so you can say you're here at 800, 1.6, you kind of -- it gets you somewhere close. somebody will try to say 1.3 versus 1.1, but if you see publicly what they're stating and hopefully privately other things are going on, but it will get done, but it will be very slow. >> john boehner with the proposal he put on the table, i did see commentary from some of the far right saying
